Mural for Marijuana Dispensary “Port of Oakland”

Mural for Marijuana Dispensary “Port of Oakland”

Last week I wrote about my first outdoor wall art in America. Today I decided to write about my first interior wall mural in America: mural “the Port”.  It was created in the fall of 2013 for the same medical marijuana dispensary “Magnolia Wellness” that commissioned me for the mural “Native Birds and Plants of Northern California”. As soon as the shop opened they decided to decorate their walls with some murals. At first, a graffiti artist was hired to do some basic ornamental décor and their logo on the wall. As for the main wall in the marijuana dispensary, they wanted something unique, something that would connect them with Oakland. So the theme for the mural was chosen – it was the port of Oakland as the dispensary is located in the western part of the city, very close to the port.   Because the shop was already open, I was only able to work after the dispensary’s working hours. It wasn’t bad, it just took me almost three weeks to complete this wall mural, despite the fact that I’m usually very fast worker. I could work only few hours a night. And I actually liked it – I was fresh every day and was working very efficiently. I’m really proud of the end result. Detailed, realistic, but not overly “dry”, the mural gives patients and workers of the dispensary something to rest their eyes on, enjoy the wall art while they are waiting in line. Blue tones of the mural painting force you to relax, sit back and enjoy the details, make you forget that you are in the middle of a city. After few months some flower paintings were added to the surrounding...
My first outdoor wall art in America!

My first outdoor wall art in America!

“Native Birds and Plants of Northern California” – the title of my first outdoor mural in America. It was created for the local Bay Area medical marijuana dispensary, “Magnolia Wellness” in Oakland. After we moved to the US it was my dream and goal to create murals and outdoor wall art. I was applying for government grants and public art calls, sending my portfolio to architects and interior design companies, but nothing was bringing positive results. And finally, in September 2014, my dream came true! Magnolia Wellness was opening a new shop in Oakland, and they wanted to decorate a wall that is facing their parking lot. A while before I had created an interior wall mural called “Port of Oakland” for them. That wall decor brought so much positive attention from the business’ customers, the owner asked me to create  another mural for them. The process of creation of the mural took me one month and a week. It was one of the best experiences I’ve had in working on an outdoor wall art. I received so many compliments about the mural, so many people were thanking me for creating the art. After the mural was finished and covered with protective coating many neighboring businesses started thinking about getting some art decor for their buildings. The impact on their workers and customers was so big – that they started requesting it! _________________ VANDALISM In the spring of 2015 someone painted two big pieces of graffiti. Such vandalism is always very painful, I put a part of my heart in every art piece I make. It is like someone spits in your sole.  But nothing can be done...
