The Tales of Our Town — Public Art Mural in Batesville, Indiana
The Tales of Our Town is a large-scale public art mural created by Yulia Avgustinovich for the Batesville, Indiana Public Art Program. The mural celebrates the town’s rich history, cultural identity, and natural environment by bringing together key historical references, community cornerstones, Indiana state symbols, and the region’s native flora and fauna. Designed as a visual narrative, the artwork invites residents and visitors to connect with Batesville’s story and reflect on the shared values that shape the community.

The mural incorporates regionally significant plants, state symbols like the state flower, state bird, state insect, and animals as a visual reference to Batesville’s natural environment.

The mural was painted in the artist’s studio on aluminum composite panels using professional-grade exterior acrylic paints and finished with a protective clear coat for durability. Once completed, the panels were transported to Batesville and installed on an exterior wall with the generous support and participation of local community members. Following installation, additional elements were painted directly onto the wall to extend the composition beyond the panels, creating a cohesive and immersive experience that integrates the mural into its surrounding architecture.

This collaborative process strengthened community connections and contributed to a sense of shared ownership of the artwork. The Tales of Our Town now stands as a lasting landmark in Batesville, reflecting the town’s heritage, identity, and collective spirit while serving as a meaningful point of pride within the public realm.
