What to expect when working together
Frequently Asked Questions
This FAQ answers common questions about commissioning a mural, including process, materials, timelines, and approvals. It’s intended to support cities, organizations, developers, and private clients exploring a mural project.
General Questions
I want a mural. How do we start the mural process?
The process begins with an initial consultation to discuss your space, goals, timeline, and budget via phone, email, zoom or in person. From there, I develop a custom concept and design tailored to your location and vision.
Do you help with the design, or do I need to provide one?
I create original designs for every project. Clients are welcome to share inspiration, themes, and references to help guide the creative direction. Before painting begins, the design is fully reviewed and approved to ensure it aligns with your vision.
Can the mural be customized to our space or community?
Yes. Every mural is designed specifically for its location, taking into account architecture, lighting, surroundings, and—when applicable—local history, traditions, and community input.
Public Art & Institutional Projects:
Do you work with RFQs, RFPs, and selection panels?
Yes. I regularly work with RFQs, RFPs, and selection committees, and I am comfortable presenting concepts, timelines, and budgets to panels, boards, and city representatives.
Do you incorporate community engagement into your projects?
Yes. Community engagement is an important part of many public art projects. I have extensive experience facilitating collaborative design processes and community painting opportunities with participants of all ages and skill levels.
How long does a public mural project take?
Timelines vary depending on size, complexity, approvals, and site conditions. Large-scale public murals typically take several weeks from design approval to completion, and timelines can be coordinated with construction or development schedules.
What materials do you use for public murals?
I use professional-grade exterior acrylic paints and protective clear coats designed to withstand weather and UV exposure. Materials are selected specifically for durability and longevity.
How long will an exterior mural last?
Exterior murals are designed to last many years. With proper materials and periodic maintenance, they can remain vibrant for a long time before requiring touch-ups.
Do you handle permits, lifts, and equipment?
I coordinate all necessary equipment such as scaffolding or boom lifts. Permitting responsibilities vary by project and are typically handled in collaboration with the client or municipality.
Are your murals ADA- and accessibility-friendly?
Yes. Designs can be created with accessibility, visual clarity, and wayfinding considerations in mind, particularly for healthcare, senior living, and public environments.
Private & Residential Murals
What happens while the mural is being painted in my home?
I work carefully and respectfully in private homes. The work area is kept organized, and I communicate clearly about timing and access throughout the process.
How disruptive is the process?
Most residential murals are completed with minimal disruption. I work efficiently and plan around your schedule whenever possible.
Are the paints safe for children, pets, and indoor spaces?
Yes. I use high-quality, low-VOC, non-toxic acrylic paints that are safe for residential, healthcare, and senior living environments.
How long does a residential mural take?
Smaller interior murals may take a few days, while larger or more detailed projects can take longer. A clear timeline is provided before work begins.
Can murals be painted on panels instead of directly on the wall?
Yes. Murals can be painted directly on walls or on panels that are later installed, depending on your preferences and site conditions.
Pricing & Budget
How much does a mural cost?
Pricing is based on size and complexity and typically ranges from $5 to $50 per square foot, including materials. Each project is quoted individually. Travel, lodging, lift rental, or specialty materials may be additional.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes. A design deposit is required to begin the design phase and is applied toward the total project cost. A 50% deposit is due before painting begins, with the remaining balance due upon completion. Flexible arrangements can be discussed if needed.
Is travel included in the cost?
Travel and lodging are quoted separately for out-of-state projects.
Installation & Site Preparation
What do you need from us before installation?
Once the design is approved, I need access to the space and confirmation of logistics such as power, wall condition, and lift access if required. Wall preparation can be handled by me if a turn-key approach is preferred.
Maintenance & Care
How do we care for the mural after completion?
Interior murals require minimal care, similar to any painted wall. Exterior murals may benefit from occasional gentle washing to remove dust and debris.
Can the mural be cleaned?
Yes. Murals can typically be cleaned using a soft cloth and mild soap.
Do you offer maintenance or restoration services?
Yes. Maintenance, touch-ups, and restoration services are available upon request.
Licensing & Usage Rights
Who owns the mural?
The physical mural belongs to the client. The artist retains copyright unless otherwise agreed.
Can we use photos of the mural for marketing?
Yes. Clients are welcome to use images of the mural for marketing and documentation, with artist credit appreciated.
Logistics
Do you travel for projects?
Yes. I work nationally and am available for projects throughout the United States.
Where are you based?
I am based in the Washington, DC area (Maryland) and frequently work across the U.S., including California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, and beyond.

Commissioning a mural is a collaborative, well-structured process. Each project begins with understanding the site, goals, and context of the space.
After your inquiry, you can expect clear communication, guidance through concept development, material selection, and installation, and early discussion of timeline, access, and any approval requirements.
Public and institutional projects are handled with experience in RFQs, RFPs, and stakeholder coordination. Private and residential projects emphasize discretion, safety, and respect for personal spaces.
