Nature Mural at the Shipyard Project in Green Bay WI

In the heart of Green Bay, Wisconsin, a new mural has transformed a set of towering columns into a vibrant celebration of local flora and fauna. I painted this mural for the Shipyard Redevelopment Project. My ten murals showcase the natural beauty that surrounds the city. With its bold colors and lifelike details, the artwork is more than just a visual treat; it’s a tribute to the wildlife and plant life that make Northern Wisconsin unique.

The mural is painted on both sides of the underpass’s pillars.

The murals are located at the Mason Street underpass along the Fox River. The Shipyard Redevelopment Project will also include a riverfront promenade, floating dock, fishing pier, habitat enhancement, and an accessible kayak launch.

At its core, the mural is a love letter to the region’s diverse ecosystem. From delicate wildflowers to majestic birds, every brushstroke tells a story of the plants and animals that call Green Bay home. The mural includes recognizable local species such as the vibrant purple coneflower, the playful red fox, and the elegant great blue heron. These creatures and plants aren’t just beautiful; they represent the rich natural history of this part of Wisconsin, fostering a deeper connection between residents and their environment.

As the artist behind this mural, I wanted to create something that felt both grounded in the local landscape and universally appealing. Drawing from my own experiences with nature in Green Bay, I aimed to bring attention to the hidden beauty that surrounds us—often unnoticed in the rush of daily life.

The process of painting the mural was an incredible challenge and joy. The scale of the columns required precision and attention to detail. I chose professional-grade acrylic paint to ensure longevity and vibrancy, even under the harsh Wisconsin weather. Each animal and plant was carefully mapped out to fit within the columns’ architectural lines, creating a sense of flow and harmony. The mural was designed to transform the columns into living elements within the space, rather than just static structures.

Here is my daughter Sasha helping me paint the mural.

The response to the mural has been overwhelmingly positive, and I am thrilled to see how it has resonated with the Green Bay community. It’s a reminder of the power of art to create lasting impressions and spark conversations.

I invite you to visit Green Bay and experience the mural in person. Murals like this one have the power to completely change the feel of a space. Public art can elevate our everyday environments, offering beauty, inspiration, and even a sense of pride for the community. Art in public spaces is a bridge—it connects us with our surroundings, fosters a shared sense of identity, and brings joy to people from all walks of life. In Green Bay, this mural is not just a decoration; it’s a visual statement of our region’s deep connection to nature.
