The Tales of Our Town is a large-scale Batesville Indiana mural created as part of the city’s public art program to celebrate the community’s history, identity, and connection to place. Commissioned by the Batesville IN Public Art Program, the mural was designed to visually share the stories that define the town — from its cultural roots and local traditions to Indiana state symbols and the surrounding natural environment.

Spanning 20 by 105 feet, the mural brings together layered imagery that reflects both Batesville’s past and present. Historical references, architectural elements, native flora and fauna, and symbolic motifs are woven into a cohesive composition that invites viewers to explore the town’s story over time. Through vibrant color and thoughtful visual rhythm, the artwork encourages connection, recognition, and pride among residents and visitors alike.

The mural was painted in my studio on aluminum composite panels using professional-grade exterior acrylic paint. This off-site process allowed for precision, detail, and careful layering before the artwork was transported to Batesville for installation. Local community members generously assisted with mounting the panels on the exterior wall, contributing to a collaborative installation process that strengthened the project’s community focus

After installation, additional elements were painted directly onto the wall to extend and unify the composition beyond the panel edges. This final on-site painting helped integrate the mural seamlessly into its architectural setting, creating a more immersive and cohesive public artwork.

Community involvement played an essential role throughout the project, from the mural’s subject matter to its physical realization. Today, The Tales of Our Town stands as a lasting public art mural in Batesville, Indiana, reflecting the town’s heritage, creativity, and collective spirit — a visual narrative shaped by place and the people who call it home.
