Floral public art mural in Runnemede, New Jersey by Yulia Avgustinovich, celebrating native plants, birds, local history, and community.
This vibrant floral mural was created in June 2022 for downtown Runnemede, transforming the exterior of a local flower shop into a celebration of the town’s natural beauty, history, and community spirit. Commissioned by the City of Runnemede, the mural serves as both a visual landmark and an educational artwork, highlighting native New Jersey flowers, plants, and birds alongside elements inspired by the town’s architecture and cultural identity.

Designed as a layered, place-based composition, the mural invites residents and visitors to pause, observe, and learn more about the local environment. Botanical imagery is interwoven with community references, creating a dynamic visual narrative that reflects Runnemede’s character and sense of pride.

A defining aspect of this project was its collaborative creation process. Community members contributed ideas during the design phase, ensuring the mural authentically represented local values and surroundings. Elderly volunteers from a local community center played a particularly meaningful role by painting portions of the mural on Polytab fabric off-site. These painted sections were later installed on the building’s exterior, allowing broad participation while accommodating accessibility and comfort.

The mural was completed using professional-grade exterior acrylic paints applied directly to the wall and Polytab fabric, ensuring durability and longevity in an outdoor environment. This collaborative effort not only enriched the final artwork but also strengthened community ties. Today, the mural stands as a colorful expression of Runnemede’s identity—celebrating its flora, history, and people, one blossom at a time.
